The probe is based on the electrical resistance (ER) principle, where metal loss on the element is measured as increased electrical resistance in a sensing element exposed to sand erosion. Sand production rates can be quantified by combining measured metal loss rates with average sand particle size and flow data.
The Roxar CorrOcean Sand Erosion probe provides robust, accurate measurements irrespective of flow patterns and noise created by flow conditions or other sources. It does not require calibration through sand injection for the quantification of sand production. And readings on the probe are ‘accumulated’, hence information is still available from certain periods if the instrumentation is not operating.
Corrosion resistant materials are used to distinguish sand erosion from corrosion, and sand production rates can be quantified when combining measured metal loss rates with flow rates and assumptions for sand particle size. There is no lower detection limit.

The CorrOcean sand/erosion probe is monitored by the CorrOcean SandLog instrument. SandLog is an on-line monitoring device for the Sand and Erosion sensors used in surface applications. Constructed for high durability in tough field conditions, SandLog´s low power and maintenance requirements make it ideal for remote installations and installations with limited access to equipment. Highly sensitive yet unaffected by noise and vibration, SandLog provides quick and reliable response to sand production.
Sand production conditions can change suddenly, and for that reason, SandLog is most often used in an on-line system configuration using the CorrOcean Field Interface Unit (FIU) for data communication and power. However, there is a wide range of system configurations possible, including 4-20 mA (not recommended since resolution is significantly reduced in this configuration) and off-line, using a MultiCorr or palmtop terminal for data collection. It is also reasonably easy to upgrade from off-line to on-line configuration, using the same SandLog instrument.
