Reservoir Simulation & History Matching

Fast simulation and history matching which improves reservoir understanding

Reservoir simulation and history matching provides many asset teams with a tool to understand the reservoir and predict future performance.  The history matching process itself can be very time consuming and frustrating.  This is due to our uncertainty about the reservoir, and the fact that a history match can usually be achieved through various configurations - a set of unique and distinctly different simulation models (which all condition to input data) can produce the same history match.  How do we know which one is correct?

The history matching process as an uncertainty tool

Roxar conducts reservoir simulation and history matching projects which increase the understanding of the reservoir and narrow down the uncertainty in future production.  Our engineering teams use Roxar's , together with the reservoir simulator ( or other commercial simulator), which uncovers much more than simulation would alone:

  • The process is semi-automated, allowing our engineers to run hundreds of simulation and history match runs to investigate the underlying causes of the reservoir's behaviour
  • Increased understanding of the reservoir allows us to more confidently predict future performance
  • History match speed is improved (commonly be a factor of four), allowing our engineers to focus on reservoir behaviour and prediction
  • The process allows for a much tighter link to the geological model.  The use of permeability multipliers to artificially achieve a history match becomes unnecessary
