University Collaborations

Roxar is currently affiliated to around 15 institutions globally, where the use of our software is an integral part of research and teaching in petroleum geoscience and engineering.

"Universities are a key source of talent and ideas for Roxar and academic partnerships are a central part of Roxar's corporate vision". Morten Tønnesen, RSS Regional Manager Middle East, Asia Pacific

Roxar Donates US$35 Million in Reservoir Modeling Software to Heriot-Watt’s Uncertainty Quantification Project

In February 2008, Roxar donated 164 licenses of Irap RMS to Edinburgh based Heriot Watt University, for use in Phase 2 of their Uncertainty Quantification Project.  Professor Mike Christie, of Heriot-Watt says,

“We are very pleased with Roxar’s donation of 164 licenses to use for history matching and uncertainty quantification on our linux cluster. The focus of the Uncertainty project is to develop tools and techniques for uncertainty quantification. As such, it is important that the tools we develop work with leading commercial software packages such as IRAP RMS. By working closely with Roxar, we hope to demonstrate the value of combining advanced software, modern cluster computing, and a sound understanding of theory to quantify uncertainty in reservoir performance prediction leading to better reservoir management.

Roxar has strong partnerships with the world's leading teaching and research schools in petroleum engineering and geoscience.  The aims of such partnerships are for Roxar and the universities to share technology and expertise in technology and training.  In many cases reservoir modelling and simulation techniques are a key component of teaching, particularly for PhD and Masters students, and the partnerships with Roxar provide students with access to hands-on tools that allow them to practice with the same state-of-the-art technology employed in industry.

In 2004 & 2005, Roxar donated over US$29 Million worth of reservoir modelling software for academic use at the following institutions:

  • Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK
  • Imperial College, London, UK
  • University of Manchester; UK
  • Friedrich-Schiller University, Jena, Germany
  • Technische University in Clausthal, Germany
  • University of Barcelona, Spain
  • University College Dublin, Ireland
  • University of Adelaide, Australia
  • Curtin University, Western Australia
  • Petroleum Institue, Abu Dhabi

In Russia, Roxar is playing a major role in educating petroleum geologists through its partnership with the I.M. Gubkin State University for Oil and Gas – the largest education centre for the Russian petroleum industry with more than 7000 students.

Other academic institutions with which Roxar has close links, include the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates; the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom; the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia; Stanford University in California in the United States; and the University of Trondheim in Norway. Roxar has also helped to finance a new geological modeling laboratory at Heriot-Watt University’s Institute of Petroleum Engineering in Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.

Quotes from our academic partners:

“With Spain’s largest oil company, Repsol YPF, having recently signed a major global software contract for IRAP RMS™ licenses, there is no doubt that this partnership will give the University of Barcelona access to the most advanced reservoir modeling software on the market today. We congratulate Roxar on their vision and largesse and look forward to working with them for many years to come.” Dr. Pau Arbues, University of Barcelona, Spain.

“Pooling resources and expertise from the private sector is a vital means of ensuring our graduates of tomorrow have the right skills and knowledge to move the E&P industry forward. Roxar’s industry-leading software will provide a hands-on tool that will allow our students to learn the basics of reservoir modeling with the same state-of-the-art techniques used in the industry. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership.” Professor John Kaldi, head of the Australian School of Petroleum, The University of Adelaide, Australia.

“Partnerships with the private sector have become a central part of our academic strategy and having access to the same software tools that the likes of LUKOIL, Statoil and PetroChina are using, can only enhance the skills and techniques of our students and prepare them for entering the industry. We also hope that our expertise can help Roxar to innovate even more. It’s a win-win for all parties.” Dr. Matthew Jackson, Department of Earth Science and Engineering, Imperial College, London, United Kingdom.
