Second Pilot of Roxar Oil-in-water monitor Goes Live In Eni SpA’s Cavone Oil Field

Roxar, a leading technology solutions provider to the upstream oil and gas industry, today announced that its second pilot for the Roxar Oil-in-water monitor for enhanced water characterization has gone live with Eni SpA, Italy’s second largest trading company. Eni SpA will use the monitor in its Cavone black oil field to monitor oil droplets and solids at the onshore production facility.

The pilot is part of a series of innovative technologies being rolled out at the Cavone facility to optimize production and reduce environmental impact. This includes the removal of oil from water and reducing the residual concentration of hydrocarbons in water to less than 10 ppm (parts per million) from over 1,000 ppm initially. The news on the second pilot follows the first successful installation of the Roxar Oil-in-water monitor on Statoil’s North Sea Sleipner A platform, which has been running since May 2006.

The Roxar Oil-in-water monitor, which has been developed jointly with TNO Science and Industry, is based on an advanced ultrasonic pulse-echo technology, which provides greater accuracy and reliability compared to the majority of today’s oil-in-water monitors reliant on optical technology. Individual acoustic echoes from both solids and oil droplets are analyzed and discriminated to give accurate information on size distribution (ranging from the extremely low 2-3 micrometers) and concentration.

Additional benefits of the monitor include no need for recalibration when the chemical composition changes, as direct measurements are performed at the dispersed phase; and advanced auto diagnostics functionality where the monitor is able to overcome challenges, such as equipment degradation, scaling and temperature or chemical changes. The monitor can also be inserted and extracted without interference in the production process and is suitable for installation in hazardous conditions.

Roxar CEO, Sandy Esslemont, commented on the second pilot going live:
“Whether it is the ability to improve control over the re-injection process; the ability to monitor overboard water discharge; or, as in the case of Eni SpA, the ability to access more detailed information on oil size distributions during the production process, an accurate, reliable and resilient oil in water monitor is becoming an essential tool for oil & gas producers.”

“We are delighted to be moving forward with Eni SpA in helping them optimize production and reduce environmental impact. When it comes to advanced technologies that can improve water characterization and provide greater detail on re-injection, discharged and processed water, the Roxar Oil-in-water monitor stands ahead of the field.”

Listed on the Milan and New York stock exchanges, Eni SpA operates in 70 countries and has over 72,000 employees.

Eni SpA operates in the exploration and production of hydrocarbons in Alaska, Australia, the Caspian Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, India, Italy, the Middle and Far East, the North Sea, and North and West Africa. Oil and natural gas production for the year 2005 was 1.7 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe) per day and in the first two months of 2006 production exceeded 1.8 million boe per day.

In the first pilot, Statoil is using the Roxar Oil-in-water monitor to measure overboard water discharge from the Sleipner A platform to ensure that it meets environmental requirements for limited or zero oil emissions into seawater.
